Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed social problems, bureaucratic shortcomings, political rivalries, economic difficulties, and everyday life through caricatures, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. It became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from important literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.

This issue, number 117, is dated April 4, 1936. Its cover features a comical bird-like creature, resembling a turkey or lizard, with a Hitler-like face and a body covered in bullets and ammunition instead of feathers. The illustration carries the humorous caption “League of Nations: You can’t puff yourself up, Bald Fatma... Your mother is beautiful, but you are ugly!” Through caricature and wordplay, the cover offers a satirical take on international politics and the military tensions of the 1930s.

An interior cartoon titled “War Is Getting Ready!” depicts a figure representing War training with a boxing glove bearing Hitler’s face, while a second figure resembling Mussolini appears alongside him. The scene targets the world with the threat of powerful punches, accompanied by War’s declaration: “With fists this strong, woe betide the world!” The issue also includes an “Foreign Cartoons” section featuring caricatures from abroad, as well as period advertisements for Bayer Aspirin and Nivea cream. Together, the political illustrations, international cartoons, and vintage advertisements offer a glimpse into Turkish satirical publishing and the growing anxieties surrounding war in 1936.

Key Features:

• Publication: Akbaba

• Issue Number: 117

• Publication Date: April 4, 1936

• Language: Turkish

• Publication Type: Political humor and satire magazine

• Founders: Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon

• Cover Feature: A bird-like creature with a Hitler-like face and a body covered in bullets, accompanied by a satirical caption referring to the League of Nations

• Cover Caption: “You can’t puff yourself up, Bald Fatma...
