Its first issue appeared in November 1915, and publication ended with Issue No. 27 in June 1918. The magazine aimed to report on the progress of the war, strengthen morale among Ottoman soldiers, and maintain public support for the armed forces.

Harp Mecmuası distinguished itself through its extensive use of original battlefield photography and illustrations. Despite the difficult wartime conditions and shortages of paper, it presented photographs from the fronts in high-quality print. These images formed a central part of the magazine’s presentation of military life, Ottoman troops, ceremonies, and wartime events.

The cover of this third issue, published in January 1916, features a photograph of an Ottoman soldier accompanied by the caption: “The bugler, whose breast swells with love of war, sounds the order for a victorious assault to our soldiers...” Inside, several photographs document Sultan Mehmed V’s visit to Ihlamur Pavilion and the ceremony in which he presented military standards to regimental commanders. Other photographs show Enver Pasha meeting the regiments that received their standards. The issue also includes photographs of government officials who joined the army, including Tahsin Bey, Governor of Erzurum, and İbrahim Bey, Minister of Justice.

A substantial selection of photographs documents the Gallipoli and Çanakkale fronts. Other subjects include the opening of Suriye Haşimi Street in the presence of Fourth Army Commander Cemal Pasha, wells opened in the desert, and the official opening ceremony of the railway connecting to Birüssebi (Beersheba), today located in Israel. One photograph is captioned “Muslim fighters of Jerusalem and its surroundings,” referring to Ottoman soldiers travelling in large numbers to join their units. The final section, titled “Yaşayan Ölüler” (The Living Dead), features photographs of soldiers who lost their lives in the war.

Key Features:

• Publication: Harp Mecmuası, official Ottoman military periodical issued under the Ministry of War

• Issue: No. 3, January 1916 (Kanunusani 1331)

• Language: Ottoman Turkish

• Cover Photograph: An Ottoman bugler sounding the order for a victorious assault

• Imperial Ceremony: Photographs of Sultan Mehmed V at Ihlamur Pavilion and the presentation of military standards to regimental commanders

• Enver Pasha: Photographs of Enver Pasha meeting the regiments that received their standards

• Government Officials in the Army: Photographs of Tahsin Bey, Governor of Erzurum, and İbrahim Bey, Minister of Justice

• Gallipoli Campaign: Numerous photographs from the Çanakkale and Gallipoli fronts

• Fourth Army: Opening of Suriye Haşimi Street in the presence of Commander Cemal Pasha, and photographs of wells opened in the desert

• Railway Ceremony: Official opening of the railway to Birüssebi (Beersheba), now in Israel

• Jerusalem: Photographic coverage of Ottoman soldiers from Jerusalem and its surroundings travelling to join their units

• “The Living Dead”: A closing section featuring photographs of soldiers who lost their lives during the war

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0716/3687/7450/files/1_67914ed3-a391-41db-98b9-3799c7656315.jpg?v=1793708000
https://turkrexcollectables.com/products/harp-mecmuasi-1916-ottoman-military-mag-ww1-gallipoli-front-beersheba-railway-israel-jerusalem-enver-pasha
