Artaki Candan, whose original name was Artaki Terziyan, was born in Thessaloniki in 1885 and was of Armenian origin. He is remembered as a distinguished kanun virtuoso and composer who became an important figure in Turkish classical music during the late Ottoman and early Republican periods. He initially came to Istanbul for medical education, but left medical school because of his strong dedication to music and devoted himself entirely to musical studies.
