Published until 1948, the magazine produced a total of 614 issues and brought together celebrated cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments during the Second World War. Its artistic style and critical commentary made it an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 450, is dated August 10, 1944. Its colourful cover features a gigantic, fearsome figure labelled “Defeat,” holding a small figure representing Adolf Hitler in its palm. The giant approaches Hitler with a quill pen, accompanied by the caption, “Now let me write the dark fate upon your brow!” Through this dramatic visual metaphor, the cover satirizes Nazi Germany’s increasingly precarious wartime position and suggests that defeat is about to determine Hitler’s fate.

The interior pages feature multi-panel cartoons addressing Bulgaria’s break with the Axis powers, growing anxieties in Japan, and humorous scenes from everyday life in Istanbul. Combining political caricature with social humour, this issue offers a glimpse into Turkish perceptions of international developments and the changing course of the Second World War in the summer of 1944.

Key Features:

• Publication: Karikatür

• Issue Number: 450

• Publication Date: August 10, 1944

• Language: Turkish

• Publication Type: Weekly humor and caricature magazine

• Founder: Sedat Simavi

• Cover Feature: A gigantic figure representing “Defeat” holding Adolf Hitler and approaching him with a quill pen

• Cover Caption: “Now let me write the dark fate upon your brow!”

• Political Satire: Nazi Germany’s declining wartime position and the anticipated consequences of defeat

• Interior Contents: Multi-panel cartoons about Bulgaria’s break with the Axis powers, anxieties in Japan, and everyday life in Istanbul

• Historical Interest: Turkish political caricature and social satire during the Second World War

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0716/3687/7450/files/1_12bf5153-46da-4ded-ba4f-50539c5644b1.jpg?v=1793191147
https://turkrexcollectables.com/products/karikatur-1944-humor-magazine-turkish-turkey-defeat-germany-ww2-era-bulgaria
