1001 Özel – Issue No. 6 (1950) – Turkish Comic Book

Description:

This is 1001 Özel Issue No. 6, published in 1950, from one of the earliest 1001 Özel series an important but short-lived publication in Turkish comic book history. Launched in 1950, 1001 Özel was printed by Burhanettin Erenler Printing House and published biweekly under the ownership of Kemal Özcan.

The series was inspired by the highly influential 1001 Roman magazine, which had shaped Turkish popular culture during the early years of World War II. Unlike 1001 Roman, 1001 Özel did not include prose stories and was generally designed to focus on a single comic narrative per issue. However, this early issue is notable for containing two separate comic stories, making it an unusual and desirable example within the series.

The first story is Baykuş Adam (Owl Man), a superhero-themed comic. Its original title is unknown, but it is most likely adapted from an American comic strip, reflecting the strong influence of U.S. superhero material on Turkish publications of the period.

The second story is Mandrake – Gizli Anahtar, originally known in English as “The Treasure Hunt.” Mandrake the Magician, created by Lee Falk, is one of the most iconic illusionist heroes in comic history, famous for his hypnotic powers and crime-fighting adventures. This Turkish-language edition presents the story with translated dialogue and localized visual elements, offering collectors a culturally distinct variation compared to Western printings.
