1001 Roman – Special Issue No. 40 (April 3, 1943) – Turkish Comic Magazine

Description:

This is an original Turkish comic magazine issue of 1001 Roman, Special Issue No. 40, published on April 3, 1943 by Türkiye Yayınevi. 1001 Roman first appeared on 10 July 1939 under the ownership of Tahsin Demiray and was one of the most influential early comic magazines in Turkey and played a major role in introducing international comic strips to Turkish readers during the 1940s.

A distinctive characteristic of 1001 Roman was its publishing approach: character names were often changed, stories were adapted freely, and many comics were reproduced using copied artwork. As a result, identifying the original titles of certain stories can be difficult, and many were derived from American or British newspaper strips and comics. Alongside comic strips, the magazine also included prose stories, giving it a mixed narrative structure.

The main story in this issue is titled “Kanlı İşaret” (The Bloody Mark). The original title is unknown, but the story is clearly Western-adventure themed. It follows Röne, An (Anne), and Pol (Paul) as they travel across America accompanied by their Native American guide Assini. During their journey, their companion Robinson is found dead, and the group attempts to unravel the mystery behind a bloody mark discovered at the scene. The narrative structure and setting strongly suggest that the story was adapted from an American Western or adventure strip.

With its mystery-driven Western plot and classic adaptation style, this issue represents a compelling example of early 1940s Turkish comic publishing and is of particular interest to collectors of vintage Western and mystery comics.
