Akbaba Humor Magazine – “Modern Nero” – Issue No. 107 – January 25, 1936 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Akbaba was one of the longest-running political humor magazines in Turkish press history, founded by Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon, prominent figures associated with the Beş Hececiler literary movement. Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed political rivalries, bureaucratic shortcomings, economic difficulties, and everyday social life through cartoons, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. Over its long publishing history, it became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from notable literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.

This issue, number 107, is dated January 25, 1936. Its cover features Italian leader Benito Mussolini portrayed as Nero, the Roman emperor traditionally associated with watching Rome burn. Holding a lyre, Mussolini observes the fires in Africa under the headline “Modern Nero.” The accompanying remark reads, “If they wouldn’t skimp on the oil, the spectacle would be brighter!” Through this historical reference and pointed wordplay, the illustration satirizes Mussolini’s policies and Italy’s military activities in Africa.

The issue also includes an “Ecnebi Karikatürleri” (“Foreign Cartoons”) section featuring caricatures from abroad. This international selection adds to the magazine’s appeal for collectors interested in historical cartooning and the exchange of satirical imagery across national borders. Combining political caricature with international visual humor, this issue offers a glimpse into Turkish satire and political commentary in January 1936.
