Akbaba Humor Magazine – “If Only My Foot Weren’t Tied!” – Issue No. 502 – December 1, 1943 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Akbaba was one of the longest-running political humor magazines in Turkish press history, founded by Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon, prominent figures associated with the Beş Hececiler literary movement. Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed social problems, bureaucratic shortcomings, political rivalries, economic difficulties, and everyday life through caricatures, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. It became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from important literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.
This issue, number 502, is dated December 1, 1943. Its cover features two roosters locked in a fierce fight: a black rooster wearing a German-style military helmet and a red rooster with a headpiece marked by a red star. The black rooster is tied by one leg to a wooden log labelled “Second Front” and is shown struggling as it loses its feathers. The accompanying dialogue reads, “Ah, if only my foot weren’t tied!” Through this symbolic scene, the cover satirizes Germany’s wartime position and the constraints imposed by the prospect of a second front in Europe.
The interior pages include additional cartoons concerning Germany and the ongoing war, reflecting the magazine’s use of animal imagery and visual humour to comment on international affairs. An “Ecnebi Karikatürleri” (“Foreign Cartoons”) section also presents caricatures from abroad, adding an international dimension to the issue’s satirical content. Together, these features offer a glimpse into Turkish political humour and wartime commentary in late 1943.
