Akbaba Humor Magazine – “Suspicion: Whom Are They Waiting For?” – Issue No. 514 – February 3, 1944 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Akbaba was one of the longest-running political humor magazines in Turkish press history, founded by Yusuf Ziya Ortaç and Orhan Seyfi Orhon, prominent figures associated with the Beş Hececiler literary movement. Published from 1922 to 1977, with interruptions, the magazine addressed social problems, bureaucratic shortcomings, political rivalries, economic difficulties, and everyday life through caricatures, satirical poetry, and humorous writing. It became an influential platform for Turkish satire, featuring contributions from important literary and artistic figures such as Aziz Nesin, Rıfat Ilgaz, and Turhan Selçuk.

This issue, number 514, is dated February 3, 1944. Its colourful cover, titled “Suspicion: Whom Are They Waiting For?”, depicts an angel-like figure, possibly representing the dove of peace, sitting on a bench. Leaders representing Britain, the United States, Japan, the Soviet Union, and Germany are shown curiously watching the figure from behind the trees. Through this humorous scene, the illustration comments on the uncertainty surrounding peace and the expectations of the major powers during the Second World War.

The interior pages also include a political cartoon concerning Bulgaria, adding another perspective on the international developments and political uncertainties of the wartime period. Combining symbolic cover artwork with contemporary political satire, this issue offers an interesting glimpse into Turkish humor and illustrated commentary during February 1944.
