Muhtasar Târîh-i Umûmî ve Osmânî Atlası – Ottoman Historical Atlas (1910)

Description:

This Ottoman Turkish historical atlas map was published in 1326 AH (1910) as part of “Muhtasar Târîh-i Umûmî ve Osmânî Atlası” (Concise Atlas of General and Ottoman History), written by Mehmet Eşref and printed in Istanbul at the Mekteb-i Harbiye Matbaası (Military Academy Printing House). Measuring 32 × 24.5 cm, the sheet contains three separate historical maps printed in color, illustrating the early expansion and formation of the Ottoman state.

The first map depicts the route followed by Süleyman Şah and his son Ertuğrul Gazi when they came to Asya-yı Suğrâ (Asia Minor). It illustrates the movement of the ancestors of the Ottoman Turks into Asia Minor and provides a visual representation of the early history of the Ertuğrul principality. The second map, titled “Devr-i Sultan Orhan Gazide hükümet-i Osmaniyenin aldığı vaziyet sene 761,” depicts the territorial position of the Ottoman state during the reign of Sultan Orhan Gazi, showing the expansion of Ottoman territory around the Marmara region and the first permanent Ottoman possessions in Rumelia, including the area around Gallipoli.

The third map is titled “Birinci Padişahımız Sultan Osman Gazi'nin feth ve te'sis buyurdukları hükümet-i Osmaniyenin 726 sene-i hicriyesindeki hudûd ve vaziyeti” and depicts the boundaries and territorial position of the Ottoman state in 726 AH (1326), the year associated with the death of Osman Gazi and the accession of his son Orhan Gazi. The map details the early Ottoman territory around Söğüt, Bilecik, İznik and Bursa, with the Sea of Marmara and surrounding fortresses and settlements clearly marked.

The atlas was prepared by Mehmet Eşref, who served as a Major and history teacher at the Dersaâdet Askerî İdâdîsi. The work combines general world history (Târîh-i Umûmî) with Ottoman history (Târîh-i Osmânî), using maps as visual educational tools. It was produced for use in military preparatory schools and other educational institutions of the period, helping students study historical geography and the territorial development of the Ottoman state.
