Cephe Magazine – “Sports Festival: The Turkish Amazon on Horseback” – Issue No. 10 – May 1943 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented Britain's military strength, modern society and wartime achievements to Turkish readers.

The cover of this May 1943 issue, entitled “Sports Festival Issue”, features a striking illustration of a female equestrian, described as a “Turkish Amazon”, riding a horse as it leaps over an obstacle. The sporting theme continues throughout the magazine, reflecting the importance of physical activity, youth and public celebrations during the period.

The interior pages offer a varied selection of military, sporting and cultural subjects. One feature examines the role of military gliders throughout the history of warfare and their strategic importance. The magazine also reports on the enthusiastic celebrations of the May 19 Sports and Youth Festival, including stadium performances and the participation of young people. An article by Daily Telegraph sports correspondent Frank Coles explains the technical fundamentals of English football, with detailed photographs illustrating passing, corner kicks and throw-in tactics. Other coverage explores the transport of personnel, weapons and supplies to Tunisia in support of Allied offensives. Cultural features examine the development of theatre in Turkey during the Republican era, including performances at conservatory theatres and People's Houses. The issue is further illustrated with springtime scenes from English villages and photographs of children's theatre matinees and performances.
