Cephe Magazine – “Ankara: The Capital’s 22nd Anniversary and Transformation” – Series II, Issue No. 20 – October 1945 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British military strength, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.

The cover of this October 1945 issue, Series II, No. 20, features a black-and-white photograph of a historic fortress standing on a rocky hill, depicting the silhouette of Ankara Castle. The Ankara theme continues inside with a feature marking the 22nd anniversary of the city as the capital of the Turkish Republic, tracing its transformation from its earlier appearance to its modern development.

The interior pages also feature illustrated autumn fashion designs from London and Paris, alongside photographs and detailed coverage of major war criminals and their trials, including Vidkun Quisling, who was executed in Norway. Other articles examine the transition from wartime industry to civilian production and the role of women in this process. The Ankara coverage includes views of the developing capital, newly greened landscapes and Çubuk Dam. Further features report on the visit to Turkey by Iraqi Regent Abdullah, British sailors' engagements in Istanbul, and a friendly football match between Ajax players and a Turkish team at Fenerbahçe Stadium. The issue also includes a feature on floating airfields, autumn horse races and a review of the film “Johnny Frenchman”.
