Cephe Magazine – “Japan Surrendered Here” – Series II, Issue No. 17 – September 1945 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe distinguished itself through its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British military strength, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.

The cover of this September 1945 issue, Series II, No. 17, carries the title “Japan Surrendered Here” and features a black-and-white aerial photograph of the historic site where Japan's surrender was signed. The image documents the location associated with the formal end of the war in the Pacific.

The interior pages examine Japan's surrender process and the negotiations held in Manila, alongside the political changes in Britain following the Labour Party's victory and Clement Attlee's formation of a new government. Other features explore eight reasons for Japan's defeat, the dawn of the atomic age and the atomic bomb, and the strategic importance of the Zonguldak coal basin in Turkey. The issue also reports on the activities of UNRRA and its contribution to Europe's recovery, while the fashion section presents women's hat styles from London.
