Cephe Magazine – “The Allied Soldier Fighting Japan, the Last Enemy” – Series II, Issue No. 11 – June 1945 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British military strength, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.

The cover of this June 1945 issue, Series II, No. 11, features a helmeted Allied soldier concealed among dense vegetation and leaves. The image symbolises the Allied troops continuing to fight Japan, described as the last remaining enemy following victory in Europe. Its camouflage setting reflects the conditions of warfare in the Pacific and Far East.

The interior pages address a wide range of wartime and cultural subjects. Particularly significant is the coverage of the Nazi atrocities committed at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and the condition of survivors liberated from the camps. Other features document the celebrations marking victory in Europe, the continuing war in the Far East and the capture of Rangoon. The magazine also presents an illustrated feature on Antalya, exploring the city's geographical characteristics, history and economy, alongside reports on developments in Turkish-British trade. Further pages cover sporting activities at Ankara's 19 May Stadium and include cinema and arts features under the title “A Star Is Born” (Muriel Pavlow)
