Cephe Magazine – “The King of England and His Stamps” – Series II, Issue No. 23 – November 1945 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British military strength, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.

The cover of this November 1945 issue, Series II, No. 23, features a black-and-white photograph of King George VI examining his personal stamp collection. The cover introduces a special feature on the British monarch's interest in philately and provides a glimpse into one of his private pursuits.

The interior pages cover a diverse range of subjects. Articles explore the King's stamp collection, mining and transportation operations in the Ruhr Basin aimed at meeting Europe's coal requirements, and the working life of the British regional administrator in British Togoland, West Africa. Other features examine the life-saving medical applications of atomic energy, the historical and natural attractions of Bursa, and film production activities at Denham Film Studios in England. The issue also includes coverage of equestrian displays known as “Gymkhana”. Further news reports document the opening ceremony of the Egyptian Parliament attended by King Farouk I and the appointment of Lieutenant General Sir Alan Cunningham as the new High Commissioner for Palestine, succeeding Lord Gort.
