Cephe Magazine – “Princess Elizabeth and a Military Vehicle” – Series II, Issue No. 8 – May 1945 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British military strength, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.

The cover of this May 1945 issue, Series II, No. 8, features a black-and-white photograph of a group of people gathered around the tyre of a military vehicle, including Princess Elizabeth. The photograph provides a glimpse into the activities and public appearances of the British Royal Family during the final months of the Second World War.

The interior pages cover a variety of political, military and cultural subjects. Articles examine Turkey's foreign policy and the Turkish delegation travelling to the Washington Conference, alongside the Allied armies' crossing of the Rhine River. The issue also pays tribute to the late American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, exploring his life, political leadership and commitment to democracy. Further coverage includes the visit of a Turkish trade delegation to Britain to study British commercial and industrial activities. The sporting section features the traditional annual rowing competition between Oxford and Cambridge universities, one of Britain's best-known university sporting traditions.
