Cephe Magazine – “Singapore” – Series II, Issue No. 19 – October 1945 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British military strength, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.
The cover of this October 1945 issue, titled “Singapore”, features a historical photograph of a formal courtroom in Singapore, associated with the military proceedings taking place in the region following the recapture of the city. The photograph reflects the postwar judicial and political developments in Southeast Asia.
The interior pages examine the recapture of Singapore, military trials in the region, the occupation of Japan and continuing military developments across the Pacific. Considerable attention is given to the identity of war criminals and the procedures through which they would be brought to justice. Beyond military and political affairs, the issue includes a feature on the production and trade of gum arabic obtained from Sudan. Other articles explore London's fashion world, including the work of leading designers and the Molyneux fashion house. The magazine also covers bullfighting and features a review of the film “Carnival”, which portrays London's fashion trends and romantic relationships during the early twentieth century.
