Cephe Magazine – “The British Locomotive Industry” – Series III, Issue No. 5 – March 1946 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during and after the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British industry, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.
The cover of this March 1946 issue, Series III, No. 5, features a striking black-and-white photograph of a large steam locomotive in motion, emitting clouds of smoke. The cover carries the headline “The British Locomotive Industry”, highlighting Britain's railway manufacturing sector and industrial capabilities.
The interior pages offer a varied selection of international, technological, social and cultural subjects. Articles examine world affairs and relations with Soviet Russia, alongside a feature titled “A Simple Navigation Instrument” about radar and its role in improving maritime and aerial navigation. The issue also reports on the Allied victory in Burma and features a reception held at London's Halkevi in honour of a visiting Turkish delegation. Further coverage explores UNRRA's relief and recovery operations in Europe following the Second World War, a fashion show held at İsmetpaşa Girls' Institute in Turkey, and the achievements of the British working class.
