Cephe Magazine – “The United Nations Emblem: A Symbol of International Peace” – Series III, Issue No. 4 – February 1946 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during and after the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British industry, society, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.

The cover of this February 1946 issue, Series III, No. 4, features the emblem of the United Nations, incorporating a world map surrounded by olive branches. The design symbolises international cooperation and the pursuit of peace in the postwar world.

The interior pages cover a diverse range of international, geographical, industrial and cultural subjects. Articles report on the visit of King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia to Egypt and examine the geographical, historical and industrial characteristics of the Turkish city of İzmit. Other features explore developments in shipbuilding, including advances in the construction of large ocean liners, and introduce historic castles in England. The issue also presents journeys between London and Piraeus aboard seaplanes described as “flying hotels”. Further coverage introduces curling, the traditional Scottish sport played on ice, profiles Nobel Prize-winning scientists and examines contemporary developments in international politics.
