Cephe Magazine – “Portrait of the Duchess of Grafton by Thomas Gainsborough” – Series IV, Issue No. 4 – February 1947 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during and after the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British society, industry, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.
The cover of this February 1947 issue, Series IV, No. 4, features a colour reproduction of a portrait of the Duchess of Grafton, painted by Thomas Gainsborough towards the end of the 18th century. The accompanying caption reads: “Portrait of the Duchess of Grafton, painted by Gainsborough towards the end of the 18th century.” The artwork provides a glimpse into Britain's artistic and aristocratic heritage.
The interior pages cover a variety of international, political, economic, medical and cultural subjects. Articles discuss the breakdown of negotiations between Britain and Egypt and the Burma Agreement, the establishment of the Fourth French Republic and the inauguration of President Vincent Auriol. Other reports examine peace negotiations concerning Germany held in London, peace treaties involving Hungary and forestry operations in Canada. The issue also includes a feature on the treatment of rheumatism, sports coverage focusing on the English football league and clubs such as Aston Villa, Chelsea and Arsenal, and an illustrated presentation of artistic masterpieces from the Art Gallery of Australia.
