Cephe Magazine – “The King and Queen of Britain in the Union of South Africa” – Series IV, Issue No. 6 – March 1947 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Cephe was an important Turkish-language propaganda and information magazine published by Britain during and after the Second World War, with the aim of influencing public opinion in Turkey. Published continuously from January 1943 to April 1947, the magazine was printed in Cairo, Egypt, and distributed in Turkey with the official permission of the Turkish government. It appeared twice a month in a large-format edition measuring approximately 26 × 40 cm. At a time when paper shortages were widespread in Turkey, Cephe stood out for its high-quality coated paper, vivid colour photographs and affordable cover price of just 20 kuruş. Through its richly illustrated pages, the magazine presented British society, industry, culture and international developments to Turkish readers.

The cover of this March 1947 issue, Series IV, No. 6, features a black-and-white photograph of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth descending a flight of stairs during their visit to the Union of South Africa. The accompanying headline reads: “The King and Queen of Britain in the Union of South Africa.” The photograph documents the royal visit and provides a glimpse into the British monarchy's international engagements during the postwar period.

The interior pages cover a diverse range of international, political, economic and cultural subjects. Articles examine the royal tour of South Africa, the Anglo-French aid agreement and the Viet Minh uprising in French Indochina. Other reports describe England under snow and the difficulties caused by severe winter conditions, agricultural activities in Seyhan Province in Turkey, and the construction of the Great Alaska Road, including the challenges encountered during the project. The issue also explores British customs operations against smuggling and features Cahide Sonku, one of the prominent figures of Turkish theatre. Further content includes English-language lessons broadcast on the radio and various cultural and artistic news items.
