Donanma Mecmuası – “The Palestine Front, Ottoman Cavalry Operations and American Naval Support to the Entente” – Issue No. 129 – August 15, 1918 – Ottoman Turkish Edition
Description:
Donanma Mecmuası was one of the most significant military and cultural periodicals of the late Ottoman Empire. Published between 1910 and 1919, with occasional interruptions, it served as the official publication of the Ottoman Naval Association (Donanma Cemiyeti), an organisation established to strengthen the declining Ottoman Navy through public financial and moral support. The magazine aimed to promote maritime awareness, encourage public donations, report on international developments in naval and aviation technology, and document the achievements of the Ottoman military and navy through articles, photographs and illustrations. During the First World War, it also became an important medium for military reporting, naval history and contemporary political commentary.
The August 15, 1918 issue, No. 129, contains extensive coverage of the Palestine Front, illustrated with five historical photographs. These include a photograph of Esad Bey's cavalry division, described in the magazine as heroes fighting against the British; a view of the town of Tiberias on the shore of Lake Tiberias; and a photograph of a lancer squadron belonging to the Ottoman cavalry division. Another image shows a reconnaissance detachment reporting the results of its operations to headquarters, while a further photograph depicts a cavalry regiment charging into battle. Together, these images provide a remarkable visual record of Ottoman cavalry operations and military activities in Palestine.
Another substantial section examines American assistance to the Entente powers, accompanied by three photographs depicting American submarines, warships and tanker vessels. The issue also recounts the wartime exploits of the small 97-ton Ottoman torpedo boat Sultanhisar, which confronted considerably larger enemy vessels in the Dardanelles. Its photograph is included alongside the article.
Further military coverage includes photographs of a captured British mortar, an Austro-Hungarian artillery battery on the Western Front and German artillery positions along the Flanders coast. The magazine also documents the Ottoman Navy's educational institutions through a photograph of the Naval Music (Military Band) School established at Çam Limanı on Heybeliada. International military figures featured in the issue include Field Marshal Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf, following his resignation after an unsuccessful Austro-Hungarian offensive on the Tyrol Front; Albanian volunteers serving in the Austro-Hungarian Army; and German Field Marshal Hermann von Eichhorn, whose assassination in Moscow by a Russian attacker is reported in the accompanying caption. These varied articles and photographs make this issue an important illustrated record of the Ottoman military, naval operations and international developments during the final year of the First World War.
