Eyyubi Ebu Bekir Ağa – Maye Nakış Ağır Semaî Ottoman Turkish 1924 Musical Notes Sheet Empire
Description:
This Ottoman Turkish sheet music contains two classical Turkish music compositions by Eyyubi Ebu Bekir Ağa: Maye Nakış Ağır Semaî and Maye Nakış Yürük Semaî. Both works are associated with the Maye makam and represent two different forms within the classical Turkish music repertoire. The publication preserves these works in traditional notation and forms part of the Dârülelhan Külliyatı, an important early Republican effort to document and preserve classical Turkish musical repertoire.
The Dârülelhan Külliyatı was a printed series of musical scores that began publication in 1924. Dârülelhan, meaning “House of Melodies,” was established in 1917 as the first official music school of the Ottoman Empire and continued its institutional role during the transition to the Republic. The institution undertook the systematic teaching, documentation and preservation of Turkish music through scholarly methods. In 1927, it was renamed the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory and became an important institutional predecessor of later conservatory education in Istanbul.
Following the establishment of the Republic, a major publishing initiative began under the directorship of Mûsâ Süreyyâ Bey. The Nota Tasnif Heyeti (Committee for the Classification of Musical Notation) prepared works from the Turkish classical repertoire for publication in fascicles, resulting in the Dârülelhan Külliyatı. This publication is identified as No. 3 of the series and was printed in Istanbul by Matbaa-i Osmaniye. Such publications played an important role in transferring the classical repertoire into systematically organized printed notation.
For collectors of Ottoman and early Republican sheet music, Turkish classical music and historical music publications, this fascicle is a significant example of the early institutional preservation of Turkish musical repertoire. Its association with Eyyubi Ebu Bekir Ağa and the Dârülelhan Külliyatı makes it particularly relevant to the history of Turkish music notation and publishing.
