Gasschutz und Luftschutz – “East Prussian Air-Raid Exercises and Technical Alarm Systems” – Heft 8 – August 1932 – German Edition

Description:

Gasschutz und Luftschutz (Gas Protection and Air-Raid Defence) was a German monthly periodical dedicated to civil defence, chemical protection and military technology. Published between 1931 and 1945 by E.S. Mittler & Sohn in Berlin, the magazine emerged in response to the chemical warfare experience of the First World War and the growing importance of military aviation. Its primary purpose was to inform and educate civilians, industrial organisations and civil defence personnel about protection against potential aerial and chemical attacks.

The magazine featured technical articles, protective equipment, gas-mask technology, air-raid shelter designs, warning systems and civil defence organisation. During the Nazi period, its coverage increasingly reflected the regime's emphasis on the expansion and organisation of civilian air-raid protection (Luftschutz), making it a historical source for studying civil defence and technical preparedness in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s.

The August 1932 issue (Heft 8) focuses particularly on air-raid protection exercises in East Prussia, presented under the title “Ostpreußischen Luftschutzübung”. Another important contribution, “Technisches über Alarmgeräte” (Technical Aspects of Alarm Devices), examines warning equipment and its technical systems. The issue also explores the operation of communication and signalling networks supporting civilian air protection activities, documenting the organisational and technological approaches to emergency preparedness during the early 1930s.
