Hammamizade İsmail Dede – Tahir Puselik Ağır Semaî & Tahir Puselik Yürük Semaî – Matbaa-i Osmaniye, Istanbul – 1924 – Ottoman Turkish

Description:

This Ottoman Turkish sheet music contains two works by Hammamizade İsmail Dede, both composed in the Tahir Puselik makam. The first work is a Tahir Puselik Ağır Semaî, followed by a Tahir Puselik Yürük Semaî, preserving two important examples of the classical Turkish music repertoire in traditional notation. The publication forms part of the Dârülelhan Külliyatı and is the 85th fascicle of the series.

Dârülelhan Külliyatı was a printed series of musical scores that began publication in 1924. Dârülelhan, meaning “House of Melodies,” was established in 1917 as the first official music school of the Ottoman Empire. During the transition to the Republic, it undertook systematic teaching, documentation and preservation of Turkish music through scholarly methods. In 1927, the institution was renamed the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory and became an important institutional predecessor of later conservatory education in Istanbul.

Following the establishment of the Republic, a major publication initiative was undertaken under the direction of Mûsâ Süreyyâ Bey. The Nota Tasnif Heyeti prepared works from the Turkish classical music repertoire for publication in fascicles, resulting in the Dârülelhan Külliyatı. This publication, numbered 85 in the series, represents this systematic effort to document and preserve the repertoire through printed musical notation. The fascicles were printed in Istanbul, generally by Matbaa-i Osmaniye.

For collectors of Ottoman and early Republican Turkish music publications, this fascicle offers both musical and historical interest. It combines two works by Hammamizade İsmail Dede in the Tahir Puselik makam and represents the institutional effort to preserve the classical Turkish music tradition through printed notation during the early years of the Republic.
