Harp Mecmuası – “An Ottoman Reconnaissance Patrol Driving Off an Enemy Cavalry Unit” – Issue No. 9 – May 1916 (Mayıs 1332) – Ottoman Turkish Edition

Description:

Harp Mecmuası was an official Ottoman military and cultural periodical published during World War I, from 1915 to 1918, under the auspices of the Ministry of War (Harbiye Nezareti) during Enver Pasha’s tenure. Its first issue appeared in November 1915, and publication ended with Issue No. 27 in June 1918. The magazine aimed to report on the progress of the war, strengthen morale among Ottoman soldiers, and maintain public support for the armed forces.

Harp Mecmuası distinguished itself through its extensive use of original battlefield photography and illustrations. Despite difficult wartime conditions and paper shortages, it presented photographs from various fronts in high-quality print. These images documented military operations, commanders, soldiers, transport and supply activities, medical services, and life behind the front lines.

The cover of this ninth issue features a photograph of Ottoman soldiers accompanied by the caption: “One of our reconnaissance patrols driving off an enemy cavalry reconnaissance unit with concentrated and successful rifle fire.” The issue includes a photograph of Süleyman Askerî Bey in Iraq, with a caption describing how, during the early stages of military operations on the Iraq Front, he resisted a superior enemy force for an extended period with a relatively small contingent. Further photographs document the Iraq Front, including images of Goltz Pasha (Colmar von der Goltz).

A substantial selection of photographs concerns the campaign towards the Suez Canal and operations in the Egyptian region. These include an Ottoman battalion entering a tent encampment, soldiers laying water pipes on the route towards Egypt, and an officer from the camel cavalry regiments returning victorious from the Battle of Katya on the Suez route. The magazine also features photographs from the Caucasus Front, including the transport of provisions by camel, and images of war volunteers in Syria. Other subjects include photographs from the Egyptian region, an English automobile destroyed by Ottoman artillery fire during the engagements east of Sollum (now near the Egypt–Libya border), and a photograph of Erzincan Military Hospital. The closing section, titled “Yaşayan Ölüler” (The Living Dead), features photographs of soldiers who lost their lives during the war.
