Harp Mecmuası – “Ottoman Heroes Hunting Enemy Aircraft over the Gallipoli Front” – Issue No. 5 – February 1916 (Şubat 1331) – Ottoman Turkish Edition
Description:
Harp Mecmuası was an official Ottoman military and cultural periodical published during World War I, from 1915 to 1918, under the auspices of the Ministry of War (Harbiye Nezareti) during Enver Pasha’s tenure. Its first issue appeared in November 1915, and publication ended with Issue No. 27 in June 1918. The magazine aimed to report on the progress of the war, strengthen morale among Ottoman soldiers, and maintain public support for the armed forces.
Harp Mecmuası distinguished itself through its extensive use of original battlefield photography and illustrations. Despite difficult wartime conditions and paper shortages, it presented photographs from various fronts in high-quality print. These images formed a central part of the magazine’s coverage of military operations, ceremonies, soldiers, and wartime life.
The cover of this fifth issue features a photograph captioned “At the Dardanelles battlefront: Our heroes who hunt enemy aircraft in the skies above.” Inside, a notable photograph shows Deputy Commander-in-Chief Enver Pasha and İbrahim Bey, Minister of Justice and honorary cavalry lieutenant, travelling by torpedo boat to the headquarters of the Fifth Army on the Gallipoli front. The issue contains numerous photographs from the Çanakkale and Arıburnu fronts, as well as images from the Caucasus and Iraq fronts, including captured Russian artillery pieces.
Further coverage includes photographs of the Mevlevi Volunteer Battalion and scenes from the fighting near Salloum in the Tripoli region of Libya. The final section, titled “Yaşayan Ölüler” (The Living Dead), features photographs of soldiers who lost their lives during the war, providing a memorial element to this extensively illustrated issue.
