Hemşeri Newspaper – “Parliamentary Elections Heat Up and the German Occupation of Czechoslovakia” – Issue No. 347 – March 20, 1939 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Hemşeri was a relatively little-known political and satirical newspaper of the Early Republican Period in Turkey, established in 1936 with the aim of connecting local communities and provincial life with the wider national public. Published at least until the end of 1945, including throughout the Second World War, it appeared twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. Reflecting the populist principles and republican ideals of its time, the newspaper sought to give a voice to ordinary citizens, peasants and workers, while covering economic affairs, agriculture, local life, domestic politics and international developments.

The front page of this March 20, 1939 issue, No. 347, features striking political headlines and illustrations. Red flags and images of the Turkish flag accompany the headline “Parliamentary Elections Heat Up”, reflecting the political atmosphere surrounding the parliamentary elections. Another prominent article, titled “The German Army Occupies Czechoslovakia from End to End”, reports on the German occupation of Czechoslovakia and is accompanied by related illustrations.

The newspaper also includes international political news concerning Hitler's presence at the Presidential Palace in Prague and the announcement that Turkey's Foreign Minister would attend the Pahlavi wedding in Iran. These reports offer an interesting glimpse into the political developments and diplomatic affairs of Europe and the Middle East in March 1939.
