Kanuni Artaki Efendi – Şebi Hüznümde Ottoman Turkish 1920s Musical Notes Sheet Empire Armenian
Description:
Şebi Hüznümde Hayalinle Teselli Bulurum is a Turkish classical music composition by Kanuni Artaki Efendi, also known as Artaki Candan, in the Hüzzam makam. Artaki Candan, whose original name was Artaki Terziyan, was born in Thessaloniki in 1885 and was of Armenian origin. He is remembered as a distinguished kanun virtuoso and composer who became an important figure in Turkish classical music during the late Ottoman and early Republican periods. He initially came to Istanbul for medical education, but left medical school because of his strong dedication to music and devoted himself entirely to musical studies. He later benefited from the instruction of Selânikli Ahmed Efendi and developed his knowledge of Turkish music and kanun performance.
Published by Kudmanizâde Udî Şamlı İskender, the sheet belongs to the important music publishing tradition associated with the Şamlı İskender family. The family had origins in Damascus and became known in Istanbul by the nickname “Şamlı,” which was also incorporated into the name of the publishing business. During the late Ottoman and early Republican periods, when access to sound recordings, radio and other forms of musical reproduction was limited, printed sheet music provided musicians and music enthusiasts with an important means of learning and preserving musical works. The publications of Şamlı İskender therefore form an important part of the printed musical heritage of the period.
Artaki Candan worked for many years with the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory's performance ensemble and became particularly renowned for his kanun playing. During the First World War years, he joined the Sahibinin Sesi record company, initially as an instrumental musician and later as a manager. In this position, he contributed to the recording and dissemination of numerous Turkish music performances. He was also a composer, with around fifty songs attributed to him, while his performances and teaching contributed to his lasting reputation in Turkish music.
This sheet was published in Istanbul during the 1920s as No. 770 of the Müntehabat series issued by Kudmanizâde Udî Şamlı İskender. The Ottoman Turkish script, Hüzzam makam indication and series number make it a valuable document for the study and collecting of early 20th-century Turkish music publications. For collectors of Ottoman and early Republican sheet music, Artaki Candan compositions, kanun-related musical history and Şamlı İskender publications, this is a notable historical example.
