Karikatür Humor Magazine – “In the Relentless Arms of War” – Issue No. 301 – October 2, 1941 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Continuing until 1948, the magazine published a total of 614 issues and brought together celebrated cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, the tensions surrounding Westernization, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 301, is dated October 2, 1941. Its cover features a striking political caricature depicting the Angel of Death, Azrael, dressed in a red robe, wearing a military helmet, and holding a large scythe while embracing an elegant woman representing Europe. Under the headline “In the Relentless Arms of War,” the woman asks, “Tell me, when will you let go of my collar?” The illustration portrays Europe as trapped in the grip of war, using the figure of Death to convey the widespread anxiety and destruction associated with the ongoing conflict. An interior cartoon titled “The Isolationists’ Snare” depicts U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt steering a warship, with a reference to American isolationist Charles Lindbergh. The accompanying dialogue humorously suggests that once Roosevelt gives the order to proceed at full speed, Lindbergh’s mooring rope will eventually come loose.

The issue combines wartime political satire with contemporary social commentary and period advertising. Among its advertisements are Gauthier Vidal paints and Singer watches, offering a glimpse into the brands promoted to Turkish readers in the early 1940s. With its dramatic cover illustration, commentary on American isolationism, and original advertisements, this issue is an interesting collectible for enthusiasts of Turkish humor magazines, historical caricature, and Second World War-era print culture.
