Karikatür Humor Magazine – “Japan Plays with the Waves in the Pacific” – Issue No. 373 – February 18, 1943 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prestigious Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Published until 1948, the magazine produced a total of 614 issues and brought together prominent cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 373, is dated February 18, 1943. Its colourful cover features a giant wave representing the challenges and dangers of naval warfare in the Pacific. Under the headline “Japan Plays with the Waves in the Pacific,” the illustration includes the anxious remark, “It’s swelling terribly; my boat is going to capsize!” Through this maritime metaphor, the cover humorously addresses the difficulties and uncertainties surrounding Japan’s naval operations during the Second World War.

The interior pages feature a multi-panel cartoon series titled “The Roles of Nations in the Current War: No. 7 – China.” The series examines the role of China in the ongoing conflict through six different perspectives, using caricature to present wartime international relations in a visual and accessible format. Together, the cover illustration and the China-focused cartoon series offer a glimpse into Turkish political satire and contemporary perceptions of the global conflict in early 1943.
