Karikatür Humor Magazine – “The Allies Are Landing Troops on the Second Front” – Issue No. 442 – June 15, 1944 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prominent Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Published until 1948, the magazine produced a total of 614 issues and featured celebrated cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic difficulties, and international developments, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 442, is dated June 15, 1944. Its colourful cover depicts Allied troops descending beneath a giant parachute decorated with American and Allied flags. The headline reads, “The Allies Are Landing Divisions of Troops on the Second Front.” A German figure reacts with the remark, “What liars! They tricked us by saying they would land in Europe, yet they keep coming down!” The cartoon uses the contrast between landing troops by sea and descending by parachute to satirize German reactions to the opening of the Western Front and the Allied military landings in Europe.

An interior cartoon depicts a ruined city lying beneath a gigantic military helmet marked with a swastika and the word “Victory.” The scene is accompanied by the lament, “All that remains beneath this dome is a pleasant sound...” This image offers a bitterly ironic reflection on the destruction of war and the gap between declarations of victory and their consequences. Together, the cover and interior illustration demonstrate the magazine’s use of visual satire to comment on the military and human consequences of the Second World War in June 1944.
