Karikatür Humor Magazine – “The Allies Have Put Out the Fire!” – Issue No. 537 – April 1, 1946 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Karikatür was a prominent Turkish weekly humor magazine founded by Sedat Simavi, with its first issue published on January 1, 1936. Published until 1948, the magazine produced a total of 614 issues and featured renowned cartoonists of the period, including Cemal Nadir Güler, Ramiz Gökçe, Necmi Rıza Ayça, and Münif Fehim. Through its distinctive illustrations, caricatures, and satirical writing, it explored social change, economic and political developments, and international affairs, becoming an important visual record of Turkey’s early Republican period.

This issue, number 537, is dated April 1, 1946. Its cover features a satirical scene titled “An Old Fire That Was About to Flare Up Again Has Been Extinguished,” depicting figures representing Uncle Sam and Britain attempting to put out a fire with a hose. The accompanying caption reads, “The Allies: We’ve put it out!” Through this visual metaphor, the illustration humorously addresses an international tension or conflict that appeared to be reigniting, presenting the Allied figures as trying to prevent the situation from escalating again.

An interior cartoon features a conversation between America and an exhausted figure. America says, “We’re talking about you. Hold on a little longer; soon you’ll be able to rest...” The weary figure replies, “Yes, if I wait a little longer, I’ll end up resting in my grave!” The exchange uses dark humour to express the frustration and uncertainty of someone waiting for relief. Other cartoons cover the forthcoming peace conference and the visit of the American battleship USS Missouri to Istanbul, reflecting contemporary interest in international diplomacy and Turkey’s place in the changing postwar landscape.
