Mizah Political Humor Magazine – “Sahibinin Sesi!” (“His Master’s Voice!”) – Issue No. 115 – September 17, 1948 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Mizah was a Turkish weekly political humor magazine founded and published by renowned cartoonist Ramiz Gökçe. Published in two periods, from July 12, 1946, to September 7, 1951, and briefly from March 14 to April 18, 1952, the magazine produced a total of 273 issues. During Turkey’s transition to multiparty politics, it became known for its oppositional editorial approach, striking political caricatures, and satirical commentary on contemporary politics, bureaucracy, and social affairs.

This issue, number 115, was published on September 17, 1948. Its cover, titled “Sahibinin Sesi!” (“His Master’s Voice!”), features a dog listening to a gramophone as propaganda slogans emerge through a large horn. The phrases “Faşist Türkler,” “Mürtedci Türkler,” and “Geri Türkler” (“Fascist Turks,” “Mürtedci Turks,” and “Backward Turks”) appear as part of the illustration. Through this striking visual metaphor, the cover satirizes the circulation of political labels and propaganda, using the dog and gramophone imagery to comment on the relationship between those broadcasting messages and those receiving them.

The interior pages include Refi’ Cevad Ulunay’s article “Demokrasiye Dair” (“On Democracy”), examining the concept of democracy and the educational system in schools. Poetry by Akıllı Ozan and Deli Ozan appears under the title “Çifte Keramet” (“Double Wonder”), alongside poems by Râsîd. Other content includes cartoons about teaching wrestling in schools, political and everyday humor, and Ramiz’s puzzle and humor column “Çömezin Röportajları: Nedir o, bil” (“The Novice’s Interviews: What Is It? Guess!”). Combining political satire, poetry, social commentary, and interactive humor, this issue offers a glimpse into Turkish satirical publishing in the late 1940s.
