Mizah 1948 Humor Magazine Turkish Turkey Uncle Sam Moscow Conference Soviet Russia USA
Mizah Political Humor Magazine – “Return from the Moscow Conference” – Issue No. 112 – August 27, 1948 – Turkish Edition
Description:
Mizah was a Turkish weekly political humor magazine founded and published by renowned cartoonist Ramiz Gökçe. Published in two periods, from July 12, 1946, to September 7, 1951, and briefly from March 14 to April 18, 1952, the magazine produced a total of 273 issues. During Turkey’s transition to multiparty politics, it became known for its oppositional editorial approach, striking cover illustrations, and satirical commentary on domestic politics, bureaucracy, and international affairs.
This issue, number 112, was published on August 27, 1948. Its cover, titled “Moskova Konferansından Dönüş” (“Return from the Moscow Conference”), depicts a skeleton symbolizing Soviet Russia removing a mask to reveal a hat bearing the hammer and sickle. Facing the skeleton, Uncle Sam retreats while holding a file marked “Moskova Konferansı” (“Moscow Conference”). Through this political caricature, the magazine uses symbolism and visual satire to comment on international diplomacy and the tensions surrounding relations between the Soviet Union and the United States in the postwar period.
The interior pages feature Refi’ Cevad Ulunay’s article “Amerika Hastalığı” (“America Fever”), discussing Turkish wrestlers’ trips to the United States and associated propaganda activities. The issue also includes poems by Akıllı Ozan and Deli Ozan, Râsîd’s poem “Ne Ararsın?” (“What Are You Looking For?”), and humorous cartoons depicting conversations between public officials and citizens. Other content addresses tram and bus fare increases, contradictions in press reports through the article “Var, Yok Meselesi” (“The Matter of What Exists and What Does Not”), and democracy education in schools in Ramiz’s column “Çömezin Röportajları: Demokrasi ve Mektepler...” (“The Novice’s Interviews: Democracy and Schools...” ).
