Muhlis Bey – Konya Folk Song Ottoman Turkish 1910s Musical Notes Sheet Empire
Description:
This Ottoman Turkish sheet music contains two separate works: Konya Türküsü, identified on the publication as “Şu Gelen Kimin Kızı,” and Üç Yıl Beni Sevdanın İpek Saçları Sardı. The Konya Türküsü is identified as being in the Hicaz Kanto makam and set in the Tek Sofyan usûlü. The second work, attributed to Muhlis Bey, is identified as being in the Nihavend makam and set in the Düyek usûlü. Together, the two pieces provide an interesting example of the variety of musical forms and regional repertoire represented in early 20th-century printed Turkish music.
Published by Kudmanizâde Udî Şamlı İskender, the sheet belongs to the important music publishing tradition associated with the Şamlı İskender family. The family had origins in Damascus and became known in Istanbul by the nickname “Şamlı,” which was also incorporated into the name of the publishing business. During the late Ottoman and early Republican periods, when access to sound recordings, radio and other forms of musical reproduction was limited, printed sheet music provided musicians and music enthusiasts with an important means of learning and preserving musical works. The publications of Şamlı İskender therefore form an important part of the printed musical heritage of the period.
The sheet was issued as No. 4 of the Müntehabat series. The notation preserves the makam and usûl information for both compositions, providing musicians with the details required for performance. The inclusion of the Konya Türküsü alongside a composition attributed to Muhlis Bey also reflects the broad range of repertoire that circulated through printed music publications in Istanbul during the period.
For collectors of Ottoman sheet music, Turkish classical music, regional Turkish songs, kanto repertoire and Şamlı İskender publications, this early printed sheet offers an interesting combination of two works within a single publication. Its No. 4 designation within the Müntehabat series further adds to its bibliographical and collecting interest.
