Ottoman-Turkish Military Map – General Sketch of Napoleon’s Campaigns 1805–1809–1814 (1927)

Description:
A rare Ottoman-Turkish military educational map, titled “Umumi Kroki  Napolyon Seferlerinden 1805, 1809, 1814 Seferlerine Aid” (General Sketch of Napoleon’s Campaigns 1805–1809–1814). Published in 1927 and measuring 57 × 37 cm, this map was prepared for use in the Hürriyet Akademisi (Academy of Liberty) during the 1927–28 academic year as part of the 1st-year military history curriculum.

The map depicts Europe during Napoleon’s major campaigns and was designed as a didactic tool for cadets studying the evolution of warfare. Its function as a classroom resource is further emphasized by handwritten notes on the surface, which likely belonged to a student officer of the period.

This map stands out as a rare example of early Republican-era military pedagogy, bridging Ottoman cartographic traditions with the newly reformed educational system of modern Turkey. It provides not only a cartographic overview of the Napoleonic Wars but also a direct historical connection to how military history was taught to future Turkish officers in the 1920s.
