Ottoman Vakıf Tapu (Deed) - Kuruçeşme, Zincirlikuyu Caddesi, İstanbul (1881)

Description:
An original Ottoman vakıf tapu (property deed) dated 7 Teşrinievvel 1297 (19 October 1881), concerning a parcel of land located in Kuruçeşme, Zincirlikuyu Caddesi, İstanbul.

The property is registered as belonging to the Nefs-i Haremeyni Şerifeyn Vakfı, one of the charitable endowments responsible for supporting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. As with many vakıf lands, the deed notes that the holder must pay an annual rent of 60 akçe to the foundation.

The plot measures 3.5 dönüm (235 zira) and is bordered by notable individuals of the late Ottoman era: on one side the land of Fatma Arayiş Hanım binti Abdullah, wife of Aziz Bey, Başkatib of the Ministry of Education (Maarif-i Umumiye); on another side the property of Mahmud Bey, physician of the Zabtiye (police corps); and on the remaining sides public roads.

Historically, the property originally belonged to Mustafa Bey and Said Pasha, who sold it for 40,000 kuruş to Fatma Arayiş Hanım. This connection with Ottoman state officials and elite families makes the document especially significant, offering a window into both vakıf administration and social history in late 19th-century Istanbul.
