Ottoman En'am-ı Sharif Prayer Book with Havas Sciences, Talismans & Wafq – Arabic & Ottoman Turkish – c. 1890s

Description:

This rare and highly collectible Ottoman En'am-ı Sharif is an original late 19th-century devotional book, believed to have been printed in Istanbul around the 1890s based on its typography, printing style, and contents. Bound in its original hardcover binding and produced in a convenient pocket-sized format (10.3 × 7.1 cm), it was intended to accompany its owner throughout daily life as both a spiritual companion and a practical guide.

Written in Arabic and Ottoman Turkish, the book belongs to the Ottoman tradition of En'am-ı Sharif volumes, which combined selected chapters of the Qur'an with prayers, talismans, wafqs (sacred numerical diagrams), and texts associated with the traditional Islamic science of Havas. Rather than serving solely as a prayer book, it functioned as a comprehensive manual for spiritual protection, healing, and daily guidance.

The principal aim of the book was to provide spiritual solutions to the many challenges an individual might encounter throughout life—from birth, marriage, and livelihood to physical illness and unseen dangers. In Ottoman society, such books were often regarded as both a spiritual remedy and a trusted household companion.

Among its contents are carefully selected Qur'anic chapters and devotional recitations including Surah Al-Fatihah, Al-Baqarah, Ya-Sin, Al-Fath, Ar-Rahman, Al-Waqi'ah, and other frequently recited surahs. Their opening verses are interconnected to form extensive supplications for fulfilling wishes and seeking divine assistance. Protective passages such as Ayat al-Kursi appear throughout the margins, creating a continuous spiritual safeguard.

The book also contains prayers and religious texts connected with important stages of everyday life, including marriage prayers and devotional practices encouraging adherence to Islamic tradition. Alongside these are numerous sections devoted to physical ailments such as headaches, eye diseases, difficult childbirth, and children's well-being, offering traditional Qur'anic remedies and supplications that reflected Ottoman religious healing practices.

Another significant portion is dedicated to metaphysical protection. Special prayers, Qur'anic verses, wafqs, and talismanic diagrams were intended to guard against the evil eye, sorcery, harmful spirits, and other unseen dangers. Additional sections include devotional formulas believed to assist with financial hardship, debt relief, and protection from enemies.

The artistic presentation is equally remarkable. The book opens with an engraved illustration of Medina (Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah), expressing devotion toward Islam's holy city. Decorative circular panels featuring the names of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs and members of the Prophet's family appear toward the end, while numerous wafqs, abjad numerical tables, symbolic "Vav" letter diagrams, and circular talismanic seals demonstrate the sophisticated visual tradition of Ottoman Havas manuscripts and printed works.

Its original Ottoman-era hardcover binding, compact format, rich religious content, and extensive use of traditional Islamic esoteric symbolism make this an exceptional example of late Ottoman devotional publishing. Surviving copies in complete condition are increasingly difficult to find, making it an important collectible for scholars, collectors of Islamic manuscripts and printed books, and those interested in Ottoman religious history.
