Ottoman LandDeed for a Vineyard in Adana – Sold by an Armenian Owner (1894)

Description:
A valuable and culturally significant Ottoman tapu senedi (land deed) documenting the sale of a vineyard in Adana, Han Kurbu Mahallesi, dated 19 Kanun-ı Sani 1309 (31 January 1894). This document provides a vivid snapshot of the multi-ethnic social fabric of late 19th-century Adana, where Muslims, Armenians, and Greeks (Rum) lived and conducted business side by side.

The land in question is a grape vineyard measuring 90 zira (approx. 5 dönüm). Originally owned by Danil veledi Sahak, a member of the Armenian community, the property was sold to İbrahim oğlu Ali for 2000 kuruş.

The boundary section includes names of Muslim and Rum neighbors, further illustrating the coexistence of various communities in the region. The deed contains Ottoman tax stamps, Armenian seals, and signatures, with additional witness signatures also including Armenian names on the reverse side, confirming the transaction.

This tapu stands out as a tangible piece of late Ottoman provincial history, capturing the economic interactions and intercommunal relations in Adana just before the turbulent decades that followed.
