Ottoman 1902 Land Deed Garden in Kırklareli Greek Rum Citizen Title Deed Armenia Armenian
Ottoman Tapu (Deed) – Garden Property with Outbuilding, Karakaş District, Kırkkilise (Kırklareli) (1902)
Description:
This Ottoman deed, dated 24 Mayıs 1320 AH (1 July 1902 CE), relates to a garden property with outbuilding located in Karakaş Mahallesi, Kırkkilise (modern-day Kırklareli). The property represented one share out of twelve in a larger estate, officially registered as a vakıf property under the Hacı Hasan Ağa Foundation. Vakıf-owned properties in the Ottoman Empire were typically transferred to private citizens in exchange for an annual payment; in this case, 480 kuruş.
The share originally belonged to a non-Muslim Ottoman citizen of Greek (Rum) background his exact name is not fully legible i was not able to read, though his wife is clearly recorded as Vasiliki. Following his death, the share passed to his heirs: his wife, son, and daughter. Vasiliki eventually sold her portion back to the Hacı Hasan Ağa Vakfı for 1,000 kuruş, despite the deed recording its value as 1,677 kuruş, suggesting the sale was made below market value.
The boundaries of the property list several neighboring owners with Armenian and Greek names, further reflecting the multi-ethnic character of late Ottoman Kırkkilise. Preserved with stamps and seals, this deed provides both a tangible link to vakıf land management practices and a rare glimpse into the lives of the region’s non-Muslim communities in the early 20th century.
