Ottoman Tapu (Deed) – Agricultural Land in Küçük Kapulu Village, Misis, Adana (1905)
Description:
This Ottoman land deed, dated 11 Kanunısani 1320 AH (24 January 1905 CE), records ownership of a substantial agricultural plot in Küçük Kapulu village, within the district of Misis, Adana. The land, measuring 60 dönüm-i atik, 22 cedid, 1 evlek, and 58 arşun, is carefully bounded on all sides by Said Efendi and his brother to the east and south, Ayşe to the west, and Karabet, an Armenian Ottoman citizen, to the north.
The deed originally belonged to Molla Ömer Yümni Bekir, an Ottoman citizen. Upon his death, with no wife or children surviving him, half of the property passed to his brother Süleyman. The land was valued at 500 kuruş at the time of record.
Documents like this not only shed light on rural property ownership and inheritance practices in the Ottoman Empire but also reveal the multicultural fabric of Adana in the early 20th century, where Muslims, Armenians, and other communities lived side by side.
