Ottoman Property Deed – Shop in Şark-ı Kebir Mahallesi, Adana (1911)
Description:
Dated April 11, 1911, this Ottoman deed records a fractional ownership transfer of a shop located in Şark-ı Kebir Mahallesi, within the district of Nefs-i Adana. The shop had originally belonged to Marta, wife of Abacı Vartan, a member of the Armenian community. Following her death in 1908 (1324 A.H.), the property passed to her son Kiragos and daughter Anuk Hatun. A portion of their share specifically 2 parts out of 24 was then sold to Musa, son of Kurdish notable Sinan Ali Ağa, for 26 Ottoman liras.
More than just a legal record, this deed is a remarkable artifact reflecting the coexistence of Armenians and Kurds in Adana under the Ottoman Empire. The presence of multiple seals and handwritten Armenian signatures adds to its rarity and cultural value. For collectors, it offers both ethnographic and historical insight into the diverse fabric of Adana in the early 20th century.
