Description:

Tarih-i Umûmî (General History) is an Ottoman Turkish history textbook prepared jointly by Ali Reşad and Ali Seydi for students of the third year of the Mekâtib-i Rüşdiye (Ottoman middle schools). The opening statement specifies that the work was “tertib edilmişdir” in accordance with the latest curriculum program accepted for the third year of the Rüşdiye schools. It presents concise information on the three major historical periods identified in the title: Kurûn-ı Ûlâ (Ancient Age), Kurûn-ı Vustâ (Middle Ages) and Kurûn-ı Cedîde (Modern Age), combining historical narrative with maps and illustrations.

Ali Reşad Bey (1877–1929) was a highly productive Turkish historian, educator and author who lived through the final period of the Ottoman Empire and the early years of the Republic. Born in Lovech in 1877, he moved with his family to Istanbul as an infant following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and graduated from the prestigious Mekteb-i Mülkiye-i Şahane in 1897. Rather than pursuing an administrative career, he chose education and taught history at important institutions including Vefa, Kabataş and Galatasaray Sultanisi. He later held senior educational positions, including the directorship of the Istanbul Directorate of Education, the Darülmuallimîn-i Âliye, and a senior post within the Ottoman Ministry of Education. From 1915, he served as a professor of Medieval History at the Darülfünun and wrote numerous history textbooks for Ottoman schools. He died in Istanbul in 1929 at the age of 52.

Ali Reşad and Ali Seydi were two idealistic educators who collaborated on educational publications during the modernization of the Ottoman school system. Their joint textbook reflects the late Ottoman effort to organize historical education according to formal curricula and to present broad historical subjects in an accessible form for school students. The work is particularly notable for combining a concise chronological structure with visual and geographical material.

The first section, Kurûn-ı Ûlâ (The Ancient Age), surveys the origins of major civilizations and the great political powers of antiquity. It covers China, India, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia—including the Sumerians, Assyrians and Babylonians—and Persia, before turning to the classical Greek world, Athens and Sparta, the empire of Alexander the Great, and the rise, development and division of the Roman Empire.

Kurûn-ı Vustâ (The Middle Ages) begins with the decline of the Roman Empire and examines the Migration Period, the transformation of Europe, feudalism and the political role of the Church. It then covers the emergence and expansion of Islam, the periods of the Prophet Muhammad and the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs, the Umayyads and Abbasids, the Great Seljuk Empire, the Crusades and the Mongol invasions. The final section, Kurûn-ı Cedîde (The Modern Age), covers the Age of Exploration, including Columbus, Vasco da Gama and Magellan, the Renaissance and Reformation, the weakening of feudalism, the rise of centralized European monarchies and the emergence of the Ottoman Empire as a major world power. Published in Istanbul by Kanaat Kitaphanesi in 1328 (approximately 1912), the book contains numerous illustrations and maps, including visual material relating to Jerusalem and the Holy Lands.
