Silver Surfer – Issue #6 – Marvel Çizgi Roman Turkish Edition (1987)

Description:

This comic is Issue #6 from the short-lived Turkish Silver Surfer series published by Marvel Çizgi Roman between 1987 and 1988. The series ran for a total of 14 issues and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications dedicated entirely to Marvel’s cosmic hero, the Silver Surfer.

Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.

The physical format of the Turkish edition is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in the Turkish market.

The cover of this issue is adapted from Fantasy Masterpieces Vol. 2 issue #9, featuring another classic Silver Surfer cover repurposed for the Turkish release. Inside, the issue includes three stories drawn from the original Silver Surfer series of the late 1960s, presenting a sequence of narratives that emphasize the character’s mixture of cosmic action and philosophical reflection.

The first story, “Hayalet Kaptan,” originates from Silver Surfer issue #8 and introduces a mysterious and haunting confrontation tied to the character known as the Ghost Captain. This story blends cosmic adventure with elements of suspense and moral conflict. It is followed by “Hayaletin Darbesi,” adapted from Silver Surfer issue #9, which continues exploring the Surfer’s encounters with unusual and often symbolic adversaries.

The final story, “Dünyasız Adam,” is drawn from Silver Surfer issue #10 and reflects one of the recurring themes of the early Silver Surfer series: isolation, exile, and the emotional burden of possessing immense cosmic power while remaining disconnected from humanity. Stories like these helped define the Silver Surfer as one of Marvel’s most introspective and philosophical characters.

As with several issues in this Turkish series, the comic also features “Gümüş Kıyakçı,” a parody interpretation of the Silver Surfer created by Turkish artist Yıldırım Örer. This locally produced satire adds a humorous dimension to the publication and reflects a distinctive aspect of Turkish comic publishing during the period, where translated international material was occasionally accompanied by original local content.
