Silver Surfer – Volume 3 – Alfa Yayınları Turkish Edition (1988)

Description:

This comic is Volume 3 of the Turkish series Gümüş Kayakçı, published by Alfa Yayınları between 1988 and 1989. The series ran for a total of 6 volumes and represents one of the earliest Turkish publications specifically devoted to the Silver Surfer. Each volume compiled stories from the earlier Marvel Çizgi Roman Silver Surfer series, often combining two original issues into a single Turkish volume, and was published every 15 days, making it a collectible periodical for readers at the time.

Unlike the original American editions, which were printed in full color, the Turkish version was produced entirely in black and white. This decision was primarily made to reduce production costs. Instead of printing directly from the original color plates, the artwork was carefully retraced using tracing paper techniques, allowing the publisher to reproduce the iconic illustrations in monochrome form. As a result, these editions have a distinctive visual character that differs noticeably from their American counterparts.

The physical format of the Gümüş Kayakçı volumes is also slightly smaller than the original U.S. comics, reflecting the printing standards commonly used by Turkish comic publishers during the 1980s. Despite these differences, the series holds a unique place in Turkish comic history, introducing readers to the philosophical and cosmic adventures of the Silver Surfer during a time when Marvel material was still relatively rare in Turkey.

The cover of Volume 3 is adapted from Silver Surfer Vol. 2 issue #2 (1987). Inside, this volume collects a substantial selection of stories from the original Silver Surfer series, offering both classic solo adventures and alternate reality explorations. The included stories are: “Zaman Yolcusu part 2” (Silver Surfer #6), continuing the Surfer’s time-travel narrative; “Eğer Evren Yokolsaydı” (What If? 1977 #43), a hypothetical scenario exploring alternate outcomes; “Frankenstein” (Silver Surfer #7), featuring a unique cosmic conflict; “Hayalet Kaptan” (Silver Surfer #8) and “Hayaletin Darbesi” (Silver Surfer #9), presenting suspenseful encounters with ghostly adversaries; and “Dünyasız Adam” (Silver Surfer #10), exploring themes of isolation and cosmic responsibility.

For collectors, Volume 3 is especially appealing due to its dense compilation of early and significant Silver Surfer storylines, blending philosophical reflection, cosmic adventure, and alternative reality narratives into a single Turkish volume with the distinctive black-and-white presentation.
