Top Gun – Issue #4 – Alfa Yayınları Turkish Edition (1987)

Description:

This comic is Issue #4 from the short-lived Top Gun comic series published in Turkey by Alfa Yayınları in 1987. The series ran for a total of four issues and represents one of the early attempts to capitalize on the international popularity of the 1986 film Top Gun starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis.

Although marketed under the Top Gun name and visually connected to the film through its covers, the interior story of the series does not function as a strict comic adaptation of the movie. While the name Maverick appears in the narrative, the storyline and character portrayals diverge significantly from the original film. The artwork inside the comic also does not closely resemble the film’s actors, suggesting that the material may have been adapted from an unrelated aviation-themed comic and later modified to align with the Top Gun brand.

This kind of editorial reinterpretation was not unusual in Turkish comic publishing during the 1980s. Publishers frequently adapted or reworked existing comic material to match popular international films, adjusting dialogue, character names, and narrative elements to appeal to contemporary audiences. As a result, the Top Gun series by Alfa Yayınları reflects a creative and sometimes improvised approach to bringing globally recognized media themes into the Turkish comic market.

The series itself remained brief, consisting of only four individual issues published in 1987. After the original run, Alfa Yayınları also released a collected “Super Cilt” edition that compiled all four issues into a single volume. Individual issues from the first print run, such as this Issue #4, therefore represent the original serialized publication before the later compilation.

The cover of this particular issue presents an especially interesting example of the publisher’s adaptation approach. The artwork appears to be visually derived from promotional imagery associated with the 1987 action film Strike Commando starring Reb Brown. The figure on the cover strongly resembles Brown’s character from that film, but the artwork seems to have been modified to evoke the image of Maverick and the Top Gun theme.

This blending of visual influences likely reflects the cultural climate of the late 1980s, when military action heroes dominated popular media. By combining stylistic elements reminiscent of Rambo with a Tom Cruise–inspired aviation hero, the cover creates a hybrid image that merges two of the era’s most recognizable action trends. For collectors, this unusual visual crossover makes Issue #4 particularly interesting, illustrating how Turkish publishers sometimes merged multiple pop culture influences into a single comic presentation.
