Ottoman Turkish Double-Sided Maps of Turkey - Geology, Economy, Population & Climate – from Orta Atlas by Faik Sabri Duran (1928)

Description:
A double-sided Ottoman Turkish atlas sheet, measuring 27.6 × 22.6 cm, from Faik Sabri Duran’s “Orta Atlas” (Middle Atlas), published in Istanbul, 1928 by Kanaat Kütüphanesi.

Although issued during the Republican period, the atlas was printed in the Arabic-based Ottoman script, as it preceded the Alphabet Reform of November 1, 1928, when the Latin alphabet officially replaced Ottoman script. This places the work among the final geography atlases produced in the Ottoman alphabet.

On one side, the sheet presents three thematic maps of Turkey:

  1. Geological Map of Turkey (Türkiye Jeoloji Haritası)

  2. Economic Map of Turkey (Türkiye İktisadi Haritası)

  3. Population Density Map of Turkey (Türkiye Nüfus Yoğunluğu Haritası)

On the other side, three additional thematic maps focus on Turkey’s climate:

  1. Summer Climate of Turkey (Türkiye Yaz İklimi)

  2. Winter Climate of Turkey (Türkiye Kış İklimi)

  3. Annual Rainfall of Turkey (Türkiye Yağmurlarının Senevi Mikdarı)

The author, Faik Sabri Duran (1882–1943), was a pioneering Turkish geographer, writer, and educator. After completing his studies at the Sorbonne (1908–1912), he introduced modern geographical education at Istanbul Darülfünun. Highly decorated by Sultan Abdülhamid II, he became synonymous with geography in Turkey, producing atlases, textbooks, and travel works that shaped the field. The Orta Atlas remains one of his most influential contributions.
