Ulus Newspaper – “The Paris Peace Conference and the Palestine Partition Plans” – July 28, 1946 – Turkish Edition

Description:

Ulus is one of the most significant political and historical newspapers in Turkish press history. Originally founded on January 10, 1920, under the name Hâkimiyet-i Milliye (National Sovereignty), at the direction of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the newspaper played an important role during the Turkish War of Independence and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. Atatürk closely followed its early publications and personally commissioned editorials. Following the Turkish Language Reform, the newspaper adopted the name Ulus on November 28, 1934. It became an important record of Turkey's political, social and historical developments.

The July 28, 1946 issue covers major international and domestic developments in the postwar period. Headlines report that the Peace Conference is to convene in Paris and that Turkey plans to construct 15,000 kilometres of new roads. International political coverage includes proposals for the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab territories, the repercussions of Turkey's elections abroad, and the relationship between Palestine and the United Nations.

Other reports examine the discovery in Istanbul of a treasure containing approximately 70 kilograms of gold coins, subsequently identified as antique coins, and a railway accident in Tokyo. The newspaper also covers developments in India and the Pakistan question. Various advertisements and public notices provide an additional glimpse into the commercial and everyday life of Turkey in 1946.
