Yusuf Paşa / Aziz Dede Ottoman Turkish 1910s Musical Notes Sheet Empire Pechrev
Description:
This Ottoman Turkish sheet music contains two classical Turkish music compositions: Hüzzam Semaî by Yusuf Paşa and Yegâh Semaî by Aziz Dede. Both works belong to the instrumental repertoire of Turkish classical music and represent the semaî form, an important form within the traditional fasıl repertoire. The inclusion of two compositions by different composers on the same printed sheet provides an interesting example of the repertoire being circulated through early 20th-century music publications.
Published by Kudmanizâde Udî Şamlı İskender, the sheet belongs to the important music publishing tradition associated with the Şamlı İskender family. The family had origins in Damascus and became known in Istanbul by the nickname “Şamlı,” which was also incorporated into the name of the publishing business. During the late Ottoman and early Republican periods, when access to sound recordings, radio and other forms of musical reproduction was limited, printed sheet music provided musicians and music enthusiasts with an important means of learning and preserving musical works. The publications of Şamlı İskender therefore form an important part of the printed musical heritage of the period.
The first work is Yusuf Paşa’s Hüzzam Semaî, while the second is Aziz Dede’s Yegâh Semaî. Their different makam identities, Hüzzam and Yegâh, demonstrate the variety of modal repertoire preserved through printed notation. As physical musical documents, such publications provided musicians with access to established compositions and helped maintain the transmission of traditional Turkish music repertoire.
Published in Istanbul during the 1910s as No. 1007, this sheet represents an early example of printed Ottoman Turkish musical notation. Its two semaî compositions, association with important figures of Turkish classical music and connection to the publishing tradition of Şamlı İskender make it an appealing historical document for collectors of Ottoman sheet music and Turkish classical music.
